Boxing and Muay Thai as a combination self defense?
CurrentY Im thinking about learning some form of fighting arts. I've always been a striker instead of a fighter, so I want to focus on strike. It would be Muay Thai boxing and a good sorta mixed martial arts? I take Muay Thai, because I say I will teach punching, kicking, knees and elbows. Just as some riveting. However, we also heard it doesn't Muay Thai good of a defense, since many are open and have a job on the wrong foot. As for boxing, I've always been a fan of the sweet science. I've heard you teach me to blow incrediably well, have good protection against blows (which are like 99% of which used in street fights), great footwork and quick reflexes. However, obviously, want to know something more than punches, so I want to learn Muay Thai. So this work as a great self defense?
Short answer – no, but not for the reasons you think. What you describe here is a good combination for a combat sport fighter, which is certainly a kind of arts martial. (As an aside, modern Muay Thai uses a lot of boxing techniques – there has been some definite cross-training in the past 50 years, as boxing hand techniques are very effective) Throw in some defense deal. and all will be good for the UFC or the like. However, both boxing and Muay Thai some specific assumptions that go into their methodology of training: 1:01 both assume a confrontation in a well lit area without encountering obstacles. Both assume that neither fighter is wielding a weapon, and that both rivals have limited technical and non-lethal stun. Finally, both assume that neither fighter is trying to surprise each other and end the fight before it starts. Unfortunately, all these restrictions up there are the final elements a real situation of self-defense: 2 or 3 mugger shooting someone in an alley and hit his head with a baseball bat before the victim has the opportunity find out what is happening, much less defend. Or the rapist lurking behind his victim and put a knife to her throat – boxing will not be much use in any scenarios, plus some fitness. the term "practice does not make perfect: it makes permanent" is a good thing to remember here. If you practiced for thousands of hours on the assumption that its target is a fellow athlete and competitor, who will take cases in a situation that was not designed for, such as being assaulted. Now, you can use a Muay Thai roundhouse take someone's knee? Sure – but how many hours they practiced that particular technique knee last minute? Enough to make the strike of the knee or groin shot instinctive? Probably not. And in that split second in the that dude, the assailant has collapsed in the head with a Louisville Slugger. A large majority of self-defense is not about technique: it is about knowledge of the situation, escalation strategies, and social engineering. Trying to read body language and control of your account. This is not to get into situations where their life is likely to put at risk, and it is run when you realize it is. When this fails, it is paralyzing your opponent (s) for long enough to get out of the situation and call the police. What you describe above is good for the UFC. It's probably good enough for you arrested in a bar fight for misuse of force, or other thing "in the street" (which is actually a euphemism for a fight adult game.) For a real self-defense "these guys are trying to kill me have been at least five minutes of thought into it? Not so much.
