What type of camera and or lens combo should i be using for shooting fights/boxing/mma/wrestling etc.?

Im sort of new to the photo game but i been blessed with the opportunity to shoot some really great events and i was just wondering what’s the best equipment camera/lens i should be using.. Im ringside at most events right now im using this little Nikon D40 that i love but feel like my shutter speed isn’t fast enough to catch all the action? (if that makes any sense) or maybe this is something a lens can fix?Anyway open to and upgrade hopefully just in a lens or 2 but willing to get a big boy camera if that will aid in crisper images and faster shots.. right now i have the pretty standard kit lens that i got as a package with the camera 18-55mm 55-200mm. I dont know what best if i should be using a D90 which i think is around 4.5 fps or what lens are best for that camera or maybe my d40

Sorry but I can only answer part of your question since you’re a Nikon fan and I’m a Canon fan. I’m sure they’re both fine cameras but everyone has their favorite brand. So basically I know a lot about Canon but nothing about Nikon LOL.

The lens you choose will depend on the type of photos you wish to take. Are we talking about SI type of “tight” photos where you see just the 2 heads and shoulders or the whole action with ring, fighters, referee..? The 55-200 telephoto fortunately will allow both.

I believe the D40 is a 6MP camera which is fine as long as you do not do poster size enlargements. If you plan to do enlargements however you’ll need a 12, 15, 21MP… DSLR. For “faster” shots, you’ll need a combination of a “fast” lens and a camera which is capable of a high max ISO speed and fps. (Frame per second as you mentioned) The reason for this is even if you have a camera with 100 fps (joking of course) but your lens isn’t “fast” (having a maximum aperture of say f/1.4, f2.8 or other small f/ numbers which allows it to allow lots of light onto the sensor) then the photos will likely not be very sharp/crisp. For indoor and low-light situations it may even be difficult just to auto-focus. The reason your camera must be able to handle high maximum ISO speed (I believe the D40′s max ISO is 1,600) is the higher ISO speeds allows, once again, shooting in low light conditions. Essentially ISO works in conjunction with both aperture and shutter speed so it basically all ties together.

Lets say the boxer swings, in a low light situation (okay maybe not LOW light since there will be many spot lights overhead but lowER light) without a fast lens and high ISO his head and shoulders will be sharp but all you’ll see of his glove will be a big red blur. So essentially the 4.5 fps will allow you to take 4.5 frames per second of big red blurs LOL.

I hope this helps. Note that the “faster” the lens (small f/ number), the higher the price unfortunately. Cameras capable of higher ISO (among many other features such as higher megapixel) will of course cost more as well.
