Ring Magazine Boxing Rankings Fighters
Aug/070

Should we be worried that Oscar and Golden Boy Promotions have bought the RING magazine?
RING magazine has always been the “golden standard” for boxing rankings, and lots of people are scared that if an active boxer PROMOTES the fights that HE’S FIGHTING IN. . . . and now owns the magazine that COVERS the fight, and RANKS the fighters, fights of the year, etc. . . . .that too much power is given to one man. Now, to be fair, Oscar has been quoted as saying that rankings would be compiled using a completely unbiased, third-party operation. . .but at the end of the day, Good Ol’ Oscar is the guy signing the checks. Who’s got any thoughts on the matter?
I’m starting to come around to your train of thought on this one. Mayweather beats ODLH, then signs with his promotion. B-Hop beats ODLH, then signs with him. Sounds like a quid pro quo. Now that they are talking about a rematch, Mayweather will basically be fighting the guy that he works for. We could be in for more quid pro quo in what will basically amount to a de-facto fixed fight.. And now ODLH owning a boxing media outlet is a lot like the President purchasing the New York Times. He can now control what’s being said about anyone, and that affects a boxer’s prestige. And prestige is how boxers make the big cash. That would encourage prospects to sign with ODLH’s promotion in return for good media coverage in ring magazine.
Quid pro quo, graft, tit for tat, cronyism, good old boy network, “you scratch my back I’ll scratch yours”…whatever you want to call it, it’s looking like a growing conflict of interest, and potentially a future monopoly. ODLH is trying to be the Walmart of Boxing. It wouldn’t be so bad, but Oscar just sucks as a boxer, and never beat a top fighter.
