Weak or no signal with antenna TV?

Recently I bought just the basic TV antenna budget "Radio Shack, as it had best critics now that some of the most expensive television antenna. I have a 32 "Samsung TV that I did some research and has a tuner ATSC, so do not need a digital converter box. I live in upper Manhattan about 7-8 miles away from where the stations are being broadcast, but all I get is weak or no signal I have tried to place the antenna facing all different ways, I'll be better with an amplified antenna?

Are you sure you are so close to the transmitters? Many people think that the studio where I work where people are supposed to point their antennas. I know a number of stations are located in the Empire. Visit http://www.antennaweb.org to assist in the aim of the antenna.
