Are the training methods of George St. Pierre common?
From everything I’ve seen and read he focuses primarily on training each aspect of competition seperately. For example he boxes against pro boxers, he wrestles against amatuer champions, he practices brazillian jujitsu with a gi and works on kick boxing. I think most fighters today train all of it at once in MMA style but he still trains them seperately. He thinks that he receives better competition in each seperate discipline making his total game better.
Based on his results it is hard to say he is doing anything wrong. Maybe it works best for him where it wouldn’t be the best for someone else.
I think it brings the pieces together as he gets closer to a fight. He is correct in training each piece of his arsenal with the best in that particular style… that way he becomes a more well-rounded fighter. When the time comes close to a match he practices with other MMA fighters to blend his fighting together.
Not a big fan of GSP but I respect him as a fighter.
