help with my 40gb ps3 not reading discs?

If my PS3 40GB in just over a year (typical form that occurs after the warranty runs out) has been boxed for about 3 maybe 4 months and after that im getting unboxing issue that drives arent being read, will help clean the lens here? I know theres an option to send to Sony, but it's wrong if I think im doomed to pay £ 145 for the service even if it is only the lens
