What is the best toy for my son for his first Christmas?

I want to take a toy box for future toys and do not mind if rather than a toy. Just do not know what the best toys. I get confused every time we go to the toy department. The problem we have is that he will be 1 year old only a month later, so its hard for him to get 12 toys for Christmas and one month old toys then just a month later. At this point, usually likes the packaging more than what's in it.

For the first Christmas my son gave her diapers. =) Do not worry so much by the age shown in the boxes. My son plays with just about anything to help us find interesting. Even if the toy says "18 months" there will be plenty will find interesting. Really only need to be careful with small parts that can be swallowed or moving parts that can pinch. Other than that, find something you think that fits their personality, animals, trucks, etc, and let him figure in his own time. In addition, books are always good. Even if they look old, that always grow in them. Kids love the pictures, plus you can feel that you are helping them learn. OH-and if they make noise, make sure you have an off button. Rule Number 1! At this point, my 13 year old son walks a month with a diaper and an empty container. Kids love anything they can learn to manipulate. But now I think I'm going to help him play with some real-break my toys over. =)
