Boxing Styles Puncher
Jul/100

How do you beat a counter puncher/shoulder roll/philly shell user in boxing?
Today i sparred with my buddy. We’re about the same height, maybe hes 1 inch taller. We also have the same reach. I weigh 215 and he weighs 183. We’re both using orthodox right handed stance. I have far more jab/right speed and strength than him and we both know that.
He started boxing for a month so he’s not far from me in experience, i’ve started boxing about 2 weeks ago. He is able to counter 2/3 of my punches, and is able to rush in and get some clean hits whilst defending himself well. He’s using the shoulder roll/philly shell defense style that Floyd Mayweather Jr and Pernell Whitaker uses in boxing matches. I probably only landed 3 shots the whole sparring match while he landed like 75-100. He wasn’t even hitting his hardest so if he did he would really destroy me. I don’t know if it’s because i’m not daring enough in the match or i need to develop a style. Right now i’m using the normal orthodox boxing stance. How do i beat him?
From my understanding of this kind of style. The oly way in which you can defeat a fighter who tends to stay in a philly shell is, that you have to work from the outside and utilise the jab to keep a fighter like that off balance. It is important that you do not dictate the center of the ring, because you will make yourself a hitting target. A jab is the most important tool in boxing, if you work a good jab everything else will follow.
It is also pivotal that you keep at a distance in which you can stay away from his right hand, if you stay in line with his left; your opponent will automatically lose his balance. Becuase he would have to exert more energy leaning to his left, this in essence will automatically lead to openings.
Finally, you could try fainting and every so often land a over hand right.
