cat box litter problems?

My year old cat was diagnosed by the vet with a urinary tract infection about 2 weeks ago. Le gave all his medicine, but then not use her litter box. So I bought another used for a day and then stopped again. Then I got a third table (because its now a mortal fear of the other two) and instead put litter in newsprint. Now, he's going to use paper tions to urinate but poop in random places around the house. The vet will do another urine test because they hold their urine for 24 hours before he leaves. I just do not understand why he does not poop in the box. He did it maybe twice and then stopped. I changed the litter.

Try cat litter from old newspapers. And do not use scented litter. That's probably reason was the ICU in the first place. Put his poop in the box a couple of times and not let him see you pick it up. After he gets used to only 1 liter BOX He will return to normal.
