Boxing Footwork
Feb/090

Why do people say that “boxing is a part of mma”?
I’ve watched some of this UFC crap, and I’ve never seen anything approximating a slip, parrying, counter-punching, good boxing footwork, or proper punching technique.
Throwing sloppy punches at a stationary target standing right in front of you is not “boxing”, any more than pulling into my driveway is auto racing.
MMA includes any style(s) of fighting whether it be Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, Muay Thai, or boxing and that isn’t limited to just stand up abilities. You would have to work on wrestling, BJJ, Judo techniques and other ground techniques. It’s much more difficult when you have to put so much more in to your arsenal bag.
I’m not putting down boxing but boxers don’t have to worry about being thrown onto the ground and pummeled. They don’t have to worry about having points taken away because they were taken down. They don’t have to worry about kicks as well. In boxing, you are not aloud to clinch and work off the clinch while in MMA if they clinch with you you can be in a lot of trouble.
Boxing is a part of MMA because the science of boxing is the science of their movements and punches which can be devastating because they work on their movements, their cardio and their punching power, as well of course punching speed and the angles that they can work off of. I don’t enjoy boxing because it just doesn’t interest me, but I would never put it down because it takes true talent to be a great boxer. I just feel as though the boxer can never do much to the MMA fighter, when their skills are leveled. As soon as the boxer works away from the rules of boxing and starts throwing kicks, he is not a boxer. He is an MMA fighter because a boxer can not throw kicks.
People forget how about boxing and put it down in the MMA world but they forget how good a boxer’s stand up would be.
