Web designing problem?

Hi..i’m currently designing a website using Microsoft Office Publisher and i’m confused. My goal is to let user choose the time n day that they want to book a car in a calendar. My idea is to click on 1 button and a calender box of a week will pop-up..users are allowed to click on the slot which is empty. If a particular time is booked then the color in the calender box would be diff. How do i do that? any idea?

I think that would definitely involve storing some information on the server side, specifically the dates and times already taken, either in a database or flat text file, so that the user could get immediate feedback on whether the spot is available or not. You would need to set up an HTML form (could be a conventional form, or linked images, etc) of some sort that would send information (POST or GET method) to another script that would handle the comparison with the existing entries. Then the result would be sent back to the user for them to see.

You would need to look into programming languages like Perl, or PHP, or general CGI programming, as well as how to do reading and writing from/to files/databases.
