Boxing Arturo Gatti
Mar/080

I used to say he was afraid to marry. But it was not for fear of a hoax or a nagging wife or the idea of losing half my money and belongings as a result of a bad divorce. While all these things become very high on my "do not want any of this shit to happen to me" list, my biggest worry was that I could lost in a boxing telecast enormous.
A marquee boxing match can be put together in just a couple of months. Most weddings a good year to be planned in advance, so that the reservation of the church hall and reception and the appalling amount of time it takes most of the brides to be to select the perfect invitations and flowers. Not to mention the bridesmaid dresses they can find more horrible. And, of course, weddings are usually held Saturdays. The same applies to boxing. This leaves open the serious possibility of my wedding that made a successful fight is lost.
But lately, I find reconsider my position. It's not because I've grown alone or hopeless. The point is that almost no boxers or intriguing potential match-ups left. Virtually all marquee fighters in the last year have been withdrawn or are in the fading twilight of his career. And there is a shortage of young talent entering the sport.
It has been said for years that the glory days of boxing are long gone. Going back as recently as five years, fighters like Roy Jones Jr. Floyd Mayweather, Felix Trinidad, Lennox Lewis, James Toney, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Fernando Vargas, Oscar de la Hoya, Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins and Arturo Gatti still lace up the gloves, at or near the top of their careers. If boxing's best days were behind him from the time these fighters were active and in his prime, what does that say about your current status?
The heavyweight division, long considered the cornerstone of boxing professional lacks talent. The possible exception to this is Wladimir Klitschko, who was eliminated a couple of times himself. Although loaded with technical skills, seems vulnerable to the ruins to the canvas at his opponent at any time, even pretends to throw a punch.
Britain's Joe Calzaghe, undefeated champion just a light heavyweight fight left before retirement – against 39-year-old, badly faded Roy Jones. Kelly Pavlik, the boxing sensation de jour in middleweight, has a pretty interesting fight scheduled with 43-year-old Bernard Hopkins in October. Hopkins, though competition always seems beyond the point to be able to beat the best of the younger fighters. And Manny Pacquiao, whom many consider the best pound fighter in boxing for pound, is a champion Light is a step forward for the welterweight December date with Oscar de la Hoya. It is likely that the 35-year fight De La Hoya farewell.
Beyond this, boxing is all a jumble. Most mega-superstar Miguel Cotto was beaten recently by Antonio Margarito, who had been defeated a year earlier by Paul Williams, who was defeated in his fight then very close to Carlos Quintana and then beat his conqueror in the rematch. Of course, this was all after beating Cotto Quintana.
Yes, there are others there who are good fighters. There's Ricky Hatton, Paul Malignaggi and Arthur Abraham to name a few. Andre Berto and Chad Dawson are a couple of impressive looking young fighters. But I do not see any of these types end up as legends of the ring. While not ready for life support, professional boxing is definitely gasping for air.
What this ultimately means to me is that my bachelor days are probably numbered. I'm out of excuses. So unless the NFL working agreement with a network of accommodation to start Saturday night football, I'm probably toast. So bring the wife and we'll be ready to rumble.
